A SCARCE .450 SIX-SHOT REVOLVER, MODEL 'TRANTER'S DOUBLE ACTION ARMY "WITH RAISED CYLINDER BAND", serial no. 55534,
circa 1877, with blued octagonal 4 1/2in. barrel, the top flat signed 'VENABLES & SON, ST ALDATES, OXFORD', the top-strap engraved 'F.L.C.J.' in script on one side of the sighting groove and '102' on the other, blued borderline engraved solid frame, plain colour-hardened cylinder (colour faded) with distinctive raised band with locking notches to rear and carved rope border to front, brushed bright hammer and trigger, chequered walnut one piece grip, iron butt-cap with lanyard ring, borderline engraved trigger-guard bow (some pitting) and 'long pear' type ejector mounted within the cylinder arbor, the whole with much original finish

Other Notes: This seldom encountered Tranter model is noted for its limited purchase (approximately 150 pieces) by the British Army for the Zulu Wars. The possibility of private purchase must also not be overlooked
